Nate was diagnosed with ALS in 2011 at 27. He lived independently and continued to drive until the spring of 2019. A series of falls caused Nate to quickly lose all confidence in his walk. He made the decision to sell his house and car and move in with his parents. Free from all of the tasks that had kept him busy while living alone, Nate began to write more. In the summer of 2020, he began to write stories from the past 10 years using his left hand, a mouse, and an on-screen keyboard. His memoir, A Life Derailed: My Journey with ALS, was finally published in 2022. He plans to continue to write to raise awareness of ALS and share his unique perspective as a person living with the disease.
